And select a color option other then the base product color , then select size and add to cart. Open the sidebar mini cart and you will see the base product thumbnail not the selected configuration simple product thumbnail.
Now goto the cart page and you will see the correct thumbnail image of the configuration you selected.
We have set in: Configuration > Sales > Checkout: Product Thumbnail Itself for both Grouped & Configurable Product Image
Thanks for your ticket but I think that this is not theme bug, please switch Luma theme to check first, I think that on the Luma theme, it also works as our theme
